642 Things to Write About Challenge: Week 35

Short one this week.

The next blockbuster medicine that will be invented and what will happen as a result.

I’m one of those people who believe that cancer will never be cured.  I get all conspiracy about big pharmaceutical companies teaming up with evil rich executives of something somewhere in some fancy big white sterile office building where they squash any real attempts by hard working scientists to cure something that they make billions of dollars a year trying to treat.  Maybe I’ll just bitter and still grieving; maybe I’ve got my Fox Mulder-conspiracy-hat on too tightly; maybe I’m just a flat out pessimist when it comes to the subject, but that’s how I feel.  I don’t need anyone telling me otherwise.  It’s not going to change my current opinion because I come from a place of anger, frustration, and hurting.

That said, I do think that we are due for a blockbuster medical invention within the next, say, 50 years.  In my lifetime, God willing.  I think the cure for obesity is coming.  It could be in pill form, or maybe via a shot or series of injections, or maybe as surgery to remove some kind of gene, but I think it’s coming.

The result, however, won’t be that we suddenly become a healthy nation.  Instead, without incentive to eat healthy and stay fit for the sake of maintaining a healthy weight and any health benefits associated with such, I think people will become lazier and the human body will course correct.  Instead of people dying from diseases like diabetes, there will be outbreaks of other epidemics, like cancer or heart disease that’s unrelated to obesity.  But that’s only my best guess.

What do you think will be the next blockbuster medicine that’s invented?  Leave your answers in the comments.
