The Ted Lasso Loot Crate Box!

Head’s up: This is one of two Ted Lasso-related posts I’ll be posting…

About a month ago, Jay sent me a text with a link to a free Loot Crate box full of Ted Lasso-related items. Since we’re big fans, we jumped on it real quick, and about two weeks ago, they arrived! It’s so much fun. It came with a kit (tape to cover Dubai Air not included), a visor, the “Believe” sign, and an AFC Richmond scarf. It’s so much fun!

Anyways, I just wanted to share and thank Loot Crate and whatever Ted Lasso production team put this together. I love it! I put the “Believe” sign over the door to my office. It may be dorky, but I feel like that sign is a perfect representation of those of us who aren’t quite ready to give up the fight in a post-2016, post-2020, and all-around “everything” world. Sure, we may be relegated and not able to pull it together, but with the best of intentions, there’s always hope. I’m a Yankees fan, but even I can get behind, “Ya gotta believe.”

The Broadcast Ep. 6.12: “Hook n Chill”

A new episode of The Broadcast came out on Friday! It’s short and sweet and we have fun going through a Twitter thread of people’s most outlandish personal stories. I hope you’ll check it out.

Official description:

On this week’s episode, the Broads talk about people’s most outlandish personal stories, Colleen’s hook, and *SPOILER ALERT* Ted Lasso. Oh, and just like snowflakes, no two nipples are the same.

As always, you can listen to the latest episode below or via jayandjack.comiTunesSpreakerSpotifyStitcherGoogle Podcasts, etc. You may have better luck searching for us as “The Broadcast with Amanda, Shandy, and Colleen” since there are a few other shows called The Broadcast.

A (Belated) Happy Lost Day!

I didn’t get a chance to watch this until after we recorded Survivor JJC last night, but I love it so much! Maaaaybe I’m a little biased because Jay and Jack are heavily featured in it, but I’m proud. 🙂  And it’s making me miss San Diego Comic-Con more than usual, haha.

I can’t believe it’s been 17 years since LOST premiered. Craziness.

Lil Jolene X

I love me some Jolene and always appreciate a good cover. This Lil Nas X cover is pretty good. (Mindy Smith and Miley’s covers are still my favorites, though.) Enjoy!

What’s your favorite Jolene cover? Jay loves the White Stripes one.

The Broadcast Ep. 6.11: “Pour One Out for Our Girls”

A new episode of The Broadcast came out on Friday! Amanda made the above gif from it, which I will probably use on an obnoxious basis because I love it so much.  Thank you, Amanda!!

This episode slightly varies from our regular format, but I still think it’s a really good one. Last week’s episode was great too, and I’m sorry I didn’t take a moment to post it as well. Tonight, we are going to be doing a one-off episode of Broad Topics to talk about what’s been going on lately (Texas, etc.). Love doing the live Zoom shows! 🙂

Official description:

Shandy is mourning the loss of Fiona, Colleen spent 36 hours in Anaheim, and Amanda has one week of back-to-work in the books. They also discuss 9/11 and its legacy. Let’s make some mayonnaise together!

36 Hours in Anaheim

Last weekend, Jay and I had a whirlwind adventure in Anaheim, California. It all began when Jay wanted to go to PowerCon for Geek. Dad. Life. We had been trying to figure out a weeklong trip to see family in California, so the original plan was to go to San Diego on Labor Day weekend then head to Los Angeles County the second half of the week and finish up at PowerCon in Anaheim, flying home at a reasonable time on Sunday.

The best-laid plans…that didn’t quite work out. First, Zachary had a surprise track change at school so he would be in school this week. Additionally, Jay and I both started new jobs this summer and don’t have the PTO to spend a week on vacation at the moment. However, the deciding factor was Jay had the honor of officiating his friend’s wedding on Friday evening! Then the plans became, “Jay flies into Anaheim for the weekend.” As a severe sufferer of FOMO, I was like, “Ummm I’m coming, too, and I’ll do my own thing!” I found us pretty reasonably-priced tickets back in June and that sealed the deal. And thus, #36HoursinAnaheim came to be.

That said, we did everything in our normal crazy way, haha. Jay’s precious GTI’s engine died a few weeks ago and was expensive to fix, so we decided to drive our “extra” car, my 2004 Rav 4, for a while as we save money for a new car. We *just* paid off the van in June and don’t want another car payment right now. Since the Rav 4 has been sitting around for a bit, we decided to get it serviced on Thursday morning to make sure there were no major issues. Turns out there were some major issues and they were going to keep it through the weekend to do the necessary repairs. So Jay rented a car on Friday afternoon, drove 4+ hours to Asheville, performed the ceremony, and then drove 4+ hours back, getting home around midnight. We got up at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, dropped the rental car off, and began our adventure.

6:30am: Ready for take off!

Our 6:42 a.m. flight took off on time. We got lucky. It was just the two of us in our row, so we could spread out and catch a few extra Zzzzz’s while we flew. When we landed, I had a thought. “Why didn’t we tell Clif we were coming?” I asked Jay.

“Well, text him now!” He exclaimed.

So, I texted Clif a picture of our plane at LAX at 8:45 a.m. PDT. He responded about an hour later with, “I have no idea what that’s a picture of, but I’m guessing you’re in California?” Oh, Clif, we’d missed you. <3

The whole weekend went like that. We reached out to friends and family and magically it all came together spectacularly. The only pre-made plans we’d had was going to a Padres/Dodgers game at Dodgers Stadium with Jay’s best friend Ryan and his wife, Jen. PowerCon was happening in our hotel (we stayed there for that reason), so once we got there, Jay went off to do geek dad things and I went off to Starbucks for some caffeine before roaming around Anaheim and…you guessed it…geocaching.

We both had awesome Saturdays. Continue reading

Survivor JJC is Back!

We’re baaaack! When Jay, Jack, and I recorded the Survivor: Winners at War finale show back in May 2020, it was most likely going to be the last episode of Survivor with Jay, Jack, and Colleen. Maybe it was just a long break or maybe absence made the heart grow fonder, but a few weeks ago, we decided we were going to come on back for Season 41. Jay had the idea to do it live each week, starting ~15 minutes after each new episode ended.

We had a lot of fun recording our preview show tonight, where we assess the cast and make predictions about how each cast member will do. Give it a listen below and subscribe to us on iTunes!

Underground Adventures!

Last weekend, I met up with a group of geocachers for a few underground adventures. And by “underground adventures,” I mean, “we were in drainage pipes and tunnels.” It was fun!

There are different types of geocaches – traditional caches, which are containers you find in the woods, on a city street, or in a parking lot (the non-woods ones are subcategorized as “urban” caches), virtual ones that require you to go to a location to answer questions, puzzle caches, blah blah blah. If you’re really interested, you can find them all listed and defined here. One type of traditional cache is subcategorized as a “tunnel” cache. You find the entrance or “trailhead” at the outset of a storm pipe drain and make your way through it until you find the container. These types of caches can be fairly easy, just requiring a flashlight or headlamp, to extremely challenging, requiring crawling through the sewer system and elevation changes from pipe-to-pipe where you’ll need a ladder and/or teamwork to get everyone up. Tunnel caches are what I met up with the group last weekend to tackle.

There was a list of 12 or so tunnels, but we knew that realistically, we would only get to maybe 6. There were a few on that list that I’d wanted to do for a while. None of them were particularly challenging, thankfully. At 5′ 3.5″, I have a height advantage, haha. At points where the taller people were really working their quads, I was still lucky enough to only be slightly hunched over. But that also meant that for some of the “jumping up” portions of the day, I needed a boost lol. I still think I had the better end of the deal.

The longest tunnel we went through was underneath the Walmart by my house (across the street from where everyone’s stayed for the podcast meet-up for the past few years). We ended up having to replace the container with a fairly large one. We hung it from the ladder that you climb up and down from when you’re accessing the drain from the street. I’m the one who did it and I took note of a street sign that I saw above me because I wanted to go back to that grate and see if I could see the container from above (I’m 95% sure you can) but of course, my perception was totally off underground and I couldn’t find the sign once I was streetside! I’m gonna find it, dammit! And take a picture!

Another tunnel we entered was a short drain pipe that emptied rainwater into Crabtree Creek at the Crabtree Valley Mall. This was a cache that I had solved a cipher puzzle to get the coordinates for a while ago and have been waiting years to find. It was an easy pipe and an easy find by a taller geocaching friend. And it was really cool because this cache was placed in 2012 and hadn’t been found by anyone since 2015. Yeah, yeah, dorky to everyone else, but super cool to us.

Another cache was in a different tunnel system in Downtown Raleigh, one that’s actually very close to my new office. The tunnel was neat – it was stone instead of concrete because it was older – and it was much cooler, temperature-wise. But the tunnel itself isn’t the notable part of this adventure. We were trying to figure out ways to get down to access the entrance. While my friend Michael was climbing down, I stopped to take a picture of him. There was a bunch of bamboo near where he climbed down, so another friend, Cheryl, went into the bamboo to see if there was an easier way into the tunnel that didn’t involve climbing 20+ feet. Just as I took the picture, I feel a sharp pinch on my stomach and cry out, “Oww!”

Then, I felt 3 more sharp pinches on my right leg. Before I know it, there’s a lot of sharp pinches all over. A third friend, Mike, had rushed over and is going, “Colleen, there are yellowjackets all over you!” as he’s swatting them away.

The Broadcast Ep. 6.9 “The Lion, The Bear, & The Jellyfish”

Need something to listen to at the beach/wherever you’re spending Labor Day weekend as all of the other bigger podcasts are taking off for the holiday? Check out this week’s episode of The Broadcast, which was released on Friday, September 3. We didn’t intend to, but somehow we ended up talking about cheese and sex positions, lol. Why not?

Here’s the official episode description:

It’s our “6.9” episode and we celebrate with cheese! Lots and lots of cheese, especially camembert. They also talk about the upcoming California governor recall election and why you shouldn’t cartoon-sex shame. It’s Manchego’s Last Stand!

Here are the links to the quizzes we took during the show:

I know my microphone has sounded weird all season. I bought a new mic a few weeks ago as a result (the popular Blue Yeti one). Even though we sound okay during sound checks, for some reason, it’s still sounding like shit after I export it. I’ve set aside some time with Jay (being my pretend cohost from another room) to really figure out what’s going on and hopefully fix it before Ep. 6.10. Thank you for your patience in that area. I’m so frustrated by it!
